The Changes That Shipped This Month
We've been quiet on the release notes, but that doesn't mean we've been idle. This month brought three significant improvements that touch the core of how you work with documents every day.
Document Viewers Now Respect Your Theme (Finally)
If you've ever switched to dark mode and then opened a document, only to be blinded by a white PDF viewer, you know the frustration. We built document viewers that forced a white-paper style regardless of your theme preference.
What changed: Document viewers now inherit your theme. Open a document in dark mode, and the viewer stays dark. Switch to light mode, and it adjusts automatically. No more jarring context switches.
This sounds simple, but it required reworking how we mount the document rendering pipeline. Previously, each viewer instance (PDF, DOCX, XLSX) had its own theme context. We collapsed those into a single wrapper that respects your workspace settings.
How to see it: Open any document with Ctrl+Enter (or Cmd+Enter on Mac) and toggle your theme in Settings. The viewer updates instantly.
The Command Palette Is Now Truly Unified
Before this month, AiFiler had three separate command palettes hiding in different parts of the app. The Universal Command handled AI intents. A separate picker managed document creation. Another handled view switching. You had to remember which palette to use for what.
We've collapsed all three into one.
What changed: Press Ctrl+Shift+A (or Cmd+Shift+A) anywhere in AiFiler, and you get one command interface that handles everything:
- AI intents (87 different commands, from "summarize this document" to "find all contracts from 2024")
- Document creation (New Document, New Matrix, New Knowledge Base)
- Navigation (Jump to workspace, switch views, open settings)
The unified command palette learns from your behavior. Use "Create new matrix" frequently? It bubbles to the top. Haven't used "Export as PDF" in months? It drops lower in the list.
Why this matters: Fewer cognitive load. You don't have to think about which interface to use. You just type what you want, and the system figures out the intent.
How to try it: Press Ctrl+Shift+A, type "create", and you'll see both AI-powered document creation suggestions and the traditional New Document option. Type "summarize", and you get AI intents. Type "dark", and you get theme settings.
Security: Four Critical Advisories Closed
We found and fixed four Supabase ERROR advisories that were silently logged but never surfaced to you. These weren't data breaches—they were edge cases in our authentication middleware where error states weren't being handled cleanly.
What was happening: When your session expired or a network hiccup occurred, AiFiler would log errors to Sentry but continue operating. This created confusion: the app looked fine, but the logs showed failures.
What we fixed:
- Replaced stale session detection in
withAuth.tsmiddleware - Hardened error propagation in Supabase client initialization
- Added explicit error boundaries for auth state mismatches
- Cleared four ERROR advisors that were cluttering logs
What you'll notice: Fewer cryptic errors in your browser console. Cleaner logs in Sentry. When something does go wrong, the error message is now actionable.
The Bigger Picture: Consolidation Over Addition
These three changes follow a pattern we've committed to: consolidation over addition. Instead of building new features, we're making existing ones work better together.
The document viewer fix removes friction. The unified command palette removes confusion. The security hardening removes noise.
This is intentional. We've shipped 87 intent handlers in the Universal Command. We have 8 edge types in the Knowledge Graph. We support 50+ file formats. The product is feature-complete for most workflows. What we're doing now is making those features work with each other, not against each other.
How to Upgrade
If you're on AiFiler Cloud, these changes are already live. No action needed.
If you're self-hosting, pull the latest from the main branch:
git pull origin main
npm install
npm run build

What's Next
We're working on three things for August:
-
Matrix performance optimization — The data-mode editor (formerly Tables) is getting faster data fetching with SWR and localStorage prefixing for offline-first support.
-
Search parser improvements — The search syntax is getting smarter. We're adding support for date ranges (
created:2025-01-01..2025-07-31), file type filters (type:pdf), and owner filters (owner:me). -
Keyboard shortcut discovery — We're building a visual keyboard shortcut guide that surfaces the 20 most useful shortcuts based on your usage patterns.
These aren't confirmed; they're what we're exploring. We'll ship what works and drop what doesn't.
Try It Today
The changes are live now. Start with the unified command palette—press Ctrl+Shift+A and spend five minutes exploring what's available. You'll probably discover intents you didn't know existed.
Then switch your theme and open a document. The viewer should follow your preference. If it doesn't, that's a bug we want to know about.
